Gran Turismo 5 (2010)

Released: November 24, 2010. Race and simulation.
Polyphony Digital and Sony Interactive Entertainment video game on PlayStation 3

GT5 is a disappointment but it remains the best episode of the series alongside the 4 (edit: and 6 now), with real developments in driving.

If the game had another name, it would not have received as many bad reviews.

Dragon’s Dogma (2012)

Released: May 25, 2012. Adventure and beat’em up.
CAPCOM video game on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC

I clearly state that the bad reception by a part of the press is incomprehensible with a whole lot of false raised points.

This game is simply the A-RPG revolution, and without a doubt the most ambitious and underestimated title of this generation.

Heavenly Sword (2007)

Released: September 19, 2007. Beat’em up and action.
Ninja Theory and Sony Interactive Entertainment video game for PlayStation 3

Good beat’em all with a splendid universe, brilliant characters and a quality narration. It descended because of its lifespan and some things that lack.

MotorStorm Pacific Rift (2008)

Released: October 30, 2008. Race.
Evolution Studios and Sony Interactive Entertainment video game on PlayStation 3

“Another Off-Road game”

No. It’s rather a revolution of the genre.

(same for the other 2)

Lair (2007)

Released: November 14, 2007. Action.
Factor 5 and Sony Interactive Entertainment video game on PlayStation 3

A game with enormous potential, very fun, but rushed in its development and marred by heavy technical problems.

Doom 3 (2004)

Released: August 2004. FPS.
Video game by id Software, Vicarious Visions and Activision on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3

“It’s scripted, it’s repetitive”.

Yes but it’s Doom, and the orientation of 3 is successful (action / horror).

Ah and there is also the “we can’t put a lamp on the gun”.

It is part of the gameplay of this torch/weapons switch, everything has been studied for that (shots and enemies often light up the environment).

With a permanent lamp, Doom 3 would be nothing more than a nasty shooter beast with less impact via its staging/quality scripts worthy of Aliens.

Quake 4 (2005)

Released: October 20, 2005. FPS and action.
Video game from Raven Software , Bethesda Softworks and Activision on Linux, PC, Xbox 360 and Mac

Doom 3 engine with addition to speed, good solo, good gunfights, the worthy successor of Quake 2 even if not as striking.

(never understood why the game had bad critics)

Prey (2006)

Released: July 13, 2006. FPS.
Video game from Human Head Studios , Venom Games , Humanhead Studios on Linux, PC, Xbox 360 and Mac

Nice scenario with an excellent twist, Prey is a good FPS that wants to be original in its level design with a concept of portals (taken over by Portal) and gravity.

Even if you can’t really die, it’s still one of the best FPS of the 2000s.

I’m looking forward to the 2.

Killzone 2 (2009)

Released: February 25, 2009. FPS.
Guerilla Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment video game on PlayStation 3

Not a fan of console-style FPS, I nevertheless loved Killzone 2, wrongly accused of being a COD clone (in reality nothing to do with COD, despite the explosive and 100% action side).

Ridge Racer 7 (2006)

Released: March 23, 2007. Race.
Video game by Namco , Sony Interactive Entertainment and BANDAI NAMCO Games on PlayStation 3

Arcade racing jewel, and best episode of the series with the Type 4.

Ridge Racer V (2000)

Released: November 24, 2000. Race.
Namco video game on PlayStation 2

PS2’s first Ridge Racer, I find it just great and it was a big slap for me when it came out. The gameplay and collisions were improved while taking the spirit of the first episodes.

Obviously, it remains below Type 4 in terms of richness and content.

Tokyo Road Race (2002)

Released: November 22, 2002. Race.
Taito Corporation video game on PlayStation 2

Battle Gear 2 aka Tokyo Road Race in the West is a good drift oriented arcade racing game.

Heavy Rain (2010)

Released: February 18, 2010. Adventure and interactive fiction.
Quantic Dream and Sony Interactive Entertainment video game on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PC

A different experience with a correct scenario with multiple choices that tickles the psychology of the player.

But “too many QTE, TV movie scenario, we set the table at the start of the game it sucks”.

I can completely understand that we are not hooking at all but there has been too much bad criticism expressed on the game.

Yakuza 3 (2009)

Ryu ga Gotoku 3

Released: March 12, 2010. Action-Adventure and beat’em up.
Ryû ga Gotoku Studio and SEGA video game on PlayStation 3

I could add all the episodes of the saga, but this one has been taken down too badly, with bad arguments.

“It’s ugly, we can’t jump the barriers and the start of the game is stupid”.

Vanquish (2010)

Released: October 22, 2010. Action.
Video game from PlatinumGames and SEGA on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One

The best 3D shooter for me, only thing that I can say bad about it, it’s too short.

People have forgotten what an arcade game is.

Zone of the Enders (2001)

Zōn obu Endāzu

Released: March 23, 2001. Action.
Konami Computer Entertainment Japan and KONAMI video game on PlayStation 2

Insulted by “technical demo” or “stew bought because demo of MGS2 included” and so on, it was however a real revelation for me when it came out, an excellent robotic action game, certainly too short, but one that I have played 3 times.

OST, universe, gameplay, story, characters, DA … Everything will be transcended with the 2nd.

Hoping for a 3rd opus and quickly!

God Hand (2006)

Released: February 15, 2007. Action and beat’em up.
Video game from Clover Studio and CAPCOM on PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3

One of the best beat’em all of all time, down because “there are technical problems and graphically it’s ugly”.

Twisted Metal: Black (2001)

Released: December 5, 2001. Action.
Incog Inc. and Sony Interactive Entertainment video game on PlayStation 2

A pearl of the car combat genre, brilliantly mixing technicality, strategy and nagging, with an atmosphere and artistic direction of the highest caliber.

But it is a genre that is not appreciated, especially in Europe.

Road Rash 3D (1998)

Released: June 1, 1998. Race.
Electronic Arts video game on PlayStation

Excellent Road Rash, probably the most complete with an almost open map.

Poor press reception, something I will never understand.

Folklore (2007)

Released: October 17, 2007. Role play and action.
Game Republic and Sony Interactive Entertainment video game on PlayStation 3

An atypical JRPG that deserves a look.

Altered Beast (1988)

Released: August 1988. Beat’em up, arcade and action.
SEGA , Sega Wow, Asmik-Ace video game on Xbox 360, PC, Mega Drive, NES, Master System, ZX Spectrum, Arcade, PC Engine, PC Engine CD, MSX, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, Amiga, Atari ST, iPhone, PSP, Wii and PlayStation 3

More a nostalgic addition than anything else, Altered Beast I spent hours there as a kid and I find this arcade trip always as unique.

Amy (2012)

Released: January 11, 2012. Adventure.
Video game by Paul Cuisset , Vector Cell and Lexis Numérique on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3

A small French project with a lot of good ideas, unfairly broken by the press.

Alpha Protocol (2010)

Released: May 28, 2010. Role play and action.
Video game by Chris Avellone, Obsidian Entertainment and SEGA on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360

Technically and graphically bad, of course, but the game is nonetheless engaging, mixing Splinter Cell with a very well integrated play role.

Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale (2012)

Released: November 21, 2012. Combat.
Video game by SuperBot Entertainment , Bluepoint Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment on PlayStation 3 and PS Vita

Descended because it is supposedly a “bad clone of Smash Bros” … I do not agree because it is entirely false. The combat system is excellent, deep and has nothing to do with SB, the evolutionary and interactive stages are great, the moves are very numerous. Excellent game in 2 VS 2.

Obviously, it lacks solo content, some emblematic characters are absent with some imbalances in the roster. But it’s a game that really deserves attention.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (2014)

Released: March 20, 2014. Action and infiltration.
Video game by Kojima Productions and KONAMI on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360

Certainly a little expensive for the content. But what content?

The tests and most of the players focused only on the Ground Zeroes mission, while there are 7 missions in total including 2 hidden, with different ways of doing them (the trophies change the size of the missions with different dialogues ), achievements / unlockable elements (playable Raiden and Chico cassettes that allow you to know more for example) and lots of awesome easter eggs (TV interrogation by Liquid Snake to win costumes!). Suffice to say that the replayability is present.

So yes it is not a classic MGS in its structure, it is a compilation of arcade missions in the literal sense on a military base with scoring and classification, it must be taken as such.

But the game is SUPER rich in details, fanservice and even content. With awesome gameplay and an exceptional level design when you start to know the Cuban base well.

It just lacks an end boss to make Ground Zeroes an absolute masterpiece.

Aside from that, I loved it and I can’t help pestering the press who obviously didn’t test the game properly by only doing a quarter of the game, without noticing its potential.

Puppeteer (2013)

Released: September 11th, 2013. Action and platform.
Video game from SIE Japan Studio and Sony Interactive Entertainment on PlayStation 3

Some shortcomings(too talkative, sometimes too easy or too stupid) but what an absolute wonder … What a work of art that is constantly renewed at all levels. I had stars in my eyes from start to finish, I feel that this game was made with passion.

Rather well received by the press, this atypical game still had no promotion and came out in absolute indifference … I feel sick to my heart that it wasn’t played as much as it deserves.

Future “underrated gem”, and that is an understatement.
